Carry the Torch Raises More Than $12,000 For Northwoods Charities

Lake of the Torches Resort Casino and participants raised $12,800 for four charities that brighten the lives of Northwoods residents as part of the Carry the Torch Fundraiser 5K Run/Walk on Sat., Aug. 26.

The event included a one-mile run with children as young as four years old running a course through downtown Lac du Flambeau and ending back at the Lake of the Torches property. Then, runners and walkers of all ages completed a 5K course through downtown Lac du Flambeau and along two picturesque lakes before returning to the casino.

All participants received a 5K Run/Walk finisher medal and medals were also awarded to the top three finishers in each age group. Those attending also participated in raffles for exciting prizes and merchandise donated from area businesses.

The Lakeland Pantry, the Wisconsin North Central Chapter of the American Red Cross, the Northwoods United Way and the Lac du Flambeau Youth Center will each receive $3,200 as part of the proceeds from the event. Lake of the Torches has sponsored the Carry the Torches fundraiser for years and has raised tens of thousands of dollars for charities that directly impact the lives of thousands of residents across northern Wisconsin.

The Lakeland Pantry serves more than 1,800 families throughout the Lakeland area. These families receive a two-week supply of food along with clothing, infant supplies and other daily essentials. The pantry distributes 16,000 pounds of food items each week.

The Lac du Flambeau Youth (Abinoojiiyag) Center offers a wide variety of after school and cultural programs for more than 500 youth in the Lac du Flambeau area. The Youth Center will use the donation to help fund its many club activities, including cultural activities and Ojibwe language instructional programs.

The American Red Cross will use its donation to help with disaster relief and providing assistance to fire victims throughout Northcentral Wisconsin. The Red Cross also teaches classes on CPR and emergency preparedness along with sending assistance to armed service members and their families.

In addition, the chapter is ready to send volunteers and supplies to assist victims of Hurricane Harvey in Texas and along the Gulf Coast. Money received will help with the ongoing efforts to provide relief to thousands who were left homeless or relocated as part of the situation whose effects will continue for months and possibly years.

The Northwoods United Way helps fund more than 20 agencies that provide services such as family resource assistance, temporary housing and youth activities to residents across Oneida, Vilas and Forest counties, according to Nancy Sattler, executive director of the Northwoods United Way.

“Thank you to everyone who contributed to making this year’s Carry The Torch Fundraiser a successful and fun event. We especially thank our volunteers and vendors whose donation made our contributions to these charities possible. These charities help our friends and neighbors every day throughout our region with crucial services and supplies,” said Lake of the Torches’ Director of Marketing Leana Schlecht.
